History of Saint Andrews United Methodist Church

Saint Andrews United Methodist Church was originally formed on October 24, 1924, by a small group of people under the name of Bethel Methodist Episcopal Church located Park Avenue in a small store in Worcester, MA, The minister at that time was Reverend William Perry. Reverend Perry and his members bought a small church located at 100 Chandler Street and the name was later changed to Saint Andrews United Methodist Church.

This church was originally formed at a meeting of the Third Quarterly Conference of said Bethel Methodist Episcopal Church of Worcester Mass. It was duly called and held in Worcester, on the 24th day of October in 1924 at 8:00pm. On a motion duly made and seconded it was voted that the trustees of the church subject to the provisions of the DISCIPLINE, the Concordia Lutheran Evangelical Church in a lot situated at number 100 Chandler Street was purchased. Beverly Tobbs, Henry J. Potter, George W. Ringles, Joseph H. Brevard, and James W. Carlos placed their signatures on the deed as trustees. Their signatures are followed by those of William E. Marks, Pastor and Charles E Spaulding, District Superintendent. The name of the church was later changed to Saint Andrews United Methodist Church and thus began Saint Andrews mission of service to God and community,

In the midst of a changing society, Saint Andrews has been affected by the revolutionary trends which have appeared in the Worcester community. In spite of its small numerical strength, many outstanding accomplishments have been evidenced by the members of Saint Andrews. The Church has bravely endured the insecurity of a transient neighborhood, and the many other perplexing problems of our “mushroom” industrial city is illustrated by the sincerity and devotion and loyalty of it faithful members.

Over the years, Saint Andrews has hosted the short interval ministries of more than 25 part-time pastors and the student ministers including Retired Bishop Woodie W. White and the Reverend Edward Wimberley, PhD. Reverend Wimberley joined Saint Andrews after he finished his degree from Boston University in May of 1972 and remained its pastor until a full time minister was hired. In 1973, Saint Andrews acquired its first full time pastor, the Reverend Dr. Louis G. Bond. Over decades, Reverend Bond has provided the necessary leadership for the church to remain strong throughout the years.

St Andrews gained support from its committees, such as the Trustees, United Methodist Women’s and Men’s Group, Weslynn Guild and their Usher Board. They continue to strive to rescue their older members from despair and their younger members from confusion. They believe in sharing the talents and strengths with one another and with the Worcester community. They continue to struggle to improve themselves, their neighborhood and the community. And, that their continuing to struggle will lead to the creation of a better Church.

The merger service of Saint Andrews United Methodist Church with Covenant United Methodist Church was held in November 2000; the service was called “Together We Are One”. Covenant Saint Andrews is located at 24 Hamilton Street in Worcester, Massachusetts. Saint Andrews parishioners didn’t physically move to 24 Hamilton Street until 2001. The Reverend Dr. Louis G. Bond remains the pastor.
